Coda Di Volpe: the obscure Italian white varietal you've probably never heard of

This week we’re featuring 2020 Tenuta Ponte Irpinia Coda Di Volpe from Campania, Italy as our Wine of the Week!

Campania is a captivating and breathtaking region in the southwest of Italy. It’s also home to two of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world: Mount Vesuvius and Campi Flegrei. Though most famous for burying Pompeii under up to 20 feet of volcanic ash in 79 A.D., Vesuvius’s violent eruptions are also responsible for the volcanic soils found in the growing zones of Irpinia, about 30 miles away. The ancient and highly underrated Coda Di Volpe grape prospers in these volcanic soils and clay deposits.

The name Coda Di Volpe literally translates to “tail of the fox” which is thought to be derived from the varietal’s dangling, long bunches of grapes reminiscent of the bushy tail of a fox. Tenuta Ponte Coda Di Volpe is an excellent representation of how this variety shines in Irpinia. This rich white wine is highly expressive on both the nose and the palate with pulpy mandarin fruit and honey notes framed by brilliant minerality.

An excellent match with seafood, pizza, homemade Guacamole, pasta, and vegetarian dishes.

2020 Tenuta Ponte Irpinia Coda Di Volpe is on sale all week for only $14.99 while supplies last.

Cheers!
