Take home this lively Barbera for just $10.99 this week!

This week we’re featuring 2019 Marchesi di Barolo Maraia Barbera del Monferrato as our Wine of the Week!

Barbera del Monferrato, situated in Italy’s picturesque Piedmont region, is probably the least known of the three classified Barbera zones. All Barbera del Monferrato wines must consist of at least 85% Barbera, while the remaining 15% can be made up from any combination of Freisa, Grignolino, and Dolcetto. These wines are also usually lighter in style than other Barbera DOC(G) wines from the Asti and Alba area and pair exceptionally well with tomato-based dishes.

The name Maraia alludes to a group of rowdy kids or “little rascals” in Piedmontese dialect, referring to the lively nature of this wine. In the glass, the wine is a brilliant dark ruby-red with pretty aromas of wild berries, currants, vanilla, and black cherry. It’s both warm and rustic on the palate with some more red fruit notes and ending with earth and underbrush accents.

As mentioned, Barbera del Monferrato wines pair especially well with tomato-based dishes as well as antipasti, light meat dishes, mushrooms, or herbaceous cheeses.
