Txakolina: your new favorite summer wine!

This week’s Wine of the Week features 2020 Camino Roca Altxerri Getariako Txakolina!

Hondarrabi Zuri is the main grape variety used to make crisp and refreshing wines from Spain’s Basque region known as Txakoli (pronounced cha-ko-lee) or sometimes Txakolina (cha-ko-lee-nah) depending on the label. One of the coolest regions in Spain, Basque’s climate is influenced by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Pyrenees to the east, and Basque mountains that run along the coast. Txakoli wines are unique and distinctive and not easily stumbled upon, which is why we’re so excited to be featuring one as our Wine of the Week. In the Basque region it is also customary when serving these wines to pour them from above head height into a glass tumbler, which causes them to fizz up dramatically.

Camino Roca Altxerri is made from 100% Hondarrabi Zuri grapes from the prestigious Getariako district. Vines are grown on seaside slopes facing the sun to keep them healthy and dry. This Txakoli is zippy and fresh with a light effervescence and aromas of grapefruit and melons, accented by herb and spring flower notes. With each sip, you can almost feel the stiff salt breeze blowing in off the Atlantic. 

Perfect chilled on a hot day or served with oysters, clams, pan fried Anchovies, mussels, and fried chicken.
